MASSIVE CHANGES ARE COMING TO LIIGA 🇫🇮👀

The Liiga’s general meeting completed today and the shareholders agreed to a revised 14+10 team league format. A summary of the changes coming to both Finland’s first and second level leagues ⬇️

Transition Season (2026–27):

• The Liiga could have a maximum of 18 teams in the transition season, while 17 is guaranteed.

• Jokerit Promotion: The Liiga proposes opening the license application for the 2026–27 season. Jokerit (last season’s Mestis champion) and the current season’s Mestis champion (or finalist if Jokerit win again), can apply for a Liiga license.

• To reach the 14-team A-Liiga for 2027–28, 2026–27 season teams ranked 17th and 18th will be directly relegated, and teams ranked 13th–16th will play a series where two teams will also be relegated. The top 12 teams make the playoffs.

Starting in the 2027-28 season:

• The league will transition to a 14+10 model (14 teams in the top A-Liiga, 10 teams in the lower B-Liiga).

• Promotion/Relegation: Movement between the leagues will be via direct relegation and promotion every year.

• The amount of teams in each league will be reviewed again in 2–3 years.

Governance and Membership Changes:

• Governance Model: A new hybrid governance model will be adopted starting 2027–28.

• Share Requirement Removed: Owning a Liiga share will no longer be mandatory to play in the league; clubs can participate with a paid annual license.

• Decision-making authority will be streamlined, shifting power from the shareholders to the Liiga Board and CEO.

• The current management group model involving club CEO’s is dismantled.

It has been reported that the Bildungsdirektion Niederösterreich (Lower Austria Education Department) will not renew their contract with Okanagan Hockey Academy after this current season… 🇦🇹❌

OHA has had their U20 team play in St. Pölten since 2011. They also have U15 and U17 squads that compete in the Austrian youth leagues.

The reason for the contract ending is the lack of Austrian players attending the academy. Currently, only 1/6th of the players rostered are from Austria, while the Bildungsdirektion Niederösterreich states that over the last 15 years only 3 Austrian players have reached a professional level out of Okanagan.
