An updated list of every European club champion! 🇪🇺🏆

Some important notes on the history of European club competitions:

From 1965-66 to 1996-97 the premier tournament was the European Cup. It was unfortunately ended due to various logistical issues such as uneven matchups. The exception being when the IIHF created the lesser Federation Cup which was played from 1994-95 to 1995-96.

The final European Cup tournament was completed in December 1996. For some reason the IIHF also launched the European Hockey League that season which finished in January 1997. I figured the final EC winner was more deserving of being on the list.

From 1998-2001 is just a confusing mess. The IIHF already had the new EHL, but decided to add the now second-tier Continental Cup. You’ll notice both are not present on the list during that time period because they also created the new IIHF Super Cup. This was first played as a single game between the reigning EC and EHL champions in September 1997. The following three editions were played between the reigning champions of the EHL and CC. Long story short, I figured the Super Cup winners might as well be called the European champions for those four seasons.

Then from 2001-02 until 2003-04 the Continental Cup was the only active tournament. That was until the IIHF created the European Champions Cup for the 2004-05 season. This tournament lasted four years and was replaced by the failed Champions Hockey League for the 2008-09 season.

By 2009-10 the Continental Cup was again Europe’s only club competition, so I figured I might as well include it on the list. The next year thr European Trophy was created, which again only lasted four season. This allowed the modern CHL to be created and has been the top-level tournament since.

When the CHL inevitably dies I will be excited to add to this mess.
